Literally looks like I ve been in a wintersleep.. Wasnt far off because I had some lame months. Coming back early november I thought that I would start the Linetraining shortly, but it became a waiting game. Rosters were published weekly and finally completed 30 november the Basetraining. Together with a group of 5 fellow pilots we did a session in Prestwick, Scotland. Consists of 6-7 touch and go’s in a empty plane. You could almost say that this was worth waiting for… Feels amazing to handle the 737. More smooth then in the sim and when you make your first landing everything is happening at the same time. The training captain was guiding and made us feel confident. Afterwards I went to see a friend in Malaga. Was nice to see him again after a long while! Was good to get your head off the TR for a few days. We surfed one day, but it was quite chilly. Both of us don’t feel cold easily but were after 2 hours more or less ice cubes..
After the Basetraining I picked up my licence in Dublin. Thought to fly back home afterwards but forgot that there are no flights on thursdays.. Headed back to East Midlands to complete the supernumories, basically adapting to the working atmosphere in the cockpit. Flew 12 sectors in 3 days across Europe. Then went home for 3 long weeks.. 23 December I had to report in Cork, Ireland for my first flight. We are able to jumpseat around the network, so went from Eindhoven to Warsaw to get a connecting flight to Cork. There was a suspicous package which kept us at the ground for 1.5 hrs. Wasnt anything serious and ended up with miscommunication between the different handling facilities. Very poor weather and runway conditions in Warsaw. This airport hasnt got state of the art navigation facilities yet.. Once landed all onward flights were cancelled and it was a antsnest to get a hotel etc. I can mention that you are quite easy in sorting out a hotel if its -12c. Next day to Cork, just took 12 hours.. Because I missed the flights I had to wait two days in Corkey. Went down to the town, and prepared a bit. The first flight was again to Warsaw, at the first instance wasnt that eager to go there again.. We flew down to the main airport Chopin. Was a undescribable feeling to land the plane with 180 passengers behind you. I literally had an awkward moment in the sense that my hands control the whole plane.. I did a very quick walkaround in my summer jacket at minus a lot..
Way back was nice, the view outside of the cockpit fascinates me. Landmarks, sea, rivers with an upcoming sun in combination with weather patterns makes it a ever changing working environment.
Exposure to flights is crucial in the early stages of flying. As a result of over recruiting and under capacity of Linetraining captains they kept me at home till the beginning of February. Still at a time where hot water is all you get from Ryanair..
Proper linetraining started from the 7th of February out of Dublin. Currently renting a small wooden hut next to the airport. Able to cook here and meet other Pilots. Takes 5 minutes to get to the crewroom. Although its not cheap its location and facilities make it a decent place to stay. Whenever flying I report 1.5 hr before the flights to prepare, to sort out the flightplan, plates, fuel and weather. Together with the captain we decide the actual fuel based on prevailing conditions. Once ready we ll hook up with the cabin crew jump in a van and make our way to the plane. First day were 4 flights from less then a hour. Dublin-East midlands and Dublin- Leeds Bradford. It was literally getting to the maximum of my workload. At a stage I had to think whether to go back of depart from an airport.. Subsequent flights made me adapt more to the working pace. Flew down to Charleroi, Alicante, Newcastle, Birmingham, Manchester and Malaga. Done 12 sectors in 4 days and went home for 4 days. Due sickness of the LTC I ve flown this week 3 days instead of 4. Its all falling into place now, been released lately which means payments start, reasonable roster and met so far very friendly people in and around the cockpit!!
